12 Ways to Get More Followers on Social Media That Actually Work

1. Share Great Content

Great content is what gets people to talk about you and share your posts — increasing your reach and growing your followers. The keys to great content are knowing your target audience and what they are interested in. Everything you post must be valuable to your audience. It should help them solve a problem, keep them informed, entertain them, or engage them. Your posts should also be concise, well-written, and accompanied by compelling visuals.

2. Post at the Right Time

Timing is important if you want your content seen by the largest possible audience. When is the best time to post? We talked about this in an earlier newsletter.  Research shows that posts published toward the end of the week perform better. Compared to other weekdays, engagement increases by eighteen percent on Thursdays and Fridays, and it increases to thirty-two percent on Saturdays and Sundays. The best times to post are in the morning at 9 a.m. and in the afternoon at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Start there and test different days and times to find out what works best for you. When do you get the most likes, comments, and retweets? That’s your sweet spot.

3. Post the Right Amount

If you bombard the audience with too many posts, you might turn people off from following you. But too little might suggest to some that you’re not worth following. We advise posting once per day on each social media platform your state uses.

4. Schedule Your Posts

Scheduling post on (E.g.) Facebook will not only save you time, but it will make it easier to post at the optimal times (and frequency) to drive engagement. And more engagement is what you need to get followers.

5. Use Compelling Visuals

People love eye-catching images and graphics. They help your content stand out and will draw in a scanning set of eyes. If you’re looking for visual content ideas, look no further than the ARNGsocialmedia.com site.

6. Try Live Video or Insta Stories

Facebook and Instagram have become the most popular places for people to watch, share, and talk about live video broadcasts and Insta stories. This content can engage, inform, and entertain in a new way, which makes it a magnet for new followers.

7. Post Questions That Get a Response

As the old saying goes, “You don’t get what you don’t ask for.” Asking a question is one of the best ways to generate engagement. It could be a simple, fun question, like we see in this post: “Do you know the number of sit ups required to pass the #Army Physical Fitness Test? Ask us about our #fitness calculator and see if you'd pass.” Questions lead to engagement, which leads to increased visibility for your posts, which leads to more followers.

8. Perfect Your #Hashtag Game

Hashtags can help you gain more followers by getting your tweets seen by a relevant audience. Posts with hashtags generally get twice as much engagement as those without them, too. Keep an eye out for the recommended weekly/monthly hashtags in each ARNG social media newsletter, and don’t forget to create your own that’s state-specific.

9. Tag Relevant People and Locations in Your Posts

Tagging users will get your content in front of the people who matter. And if it’s valuable to them and their audience, they may respond with an @mention or share. This kind of endorsement from an influencer with a similar audience as your own can help you get new followers quickly - just be selective about who you target. You may consider starting with recruiters. Also, try to tag each post with a location, like a school or your state itself. This way your posts are funneled into more location searches.

10. Follow More Accounts

Research shows a direct link between the number of people you follow and the number of people that follow you. When following new users, be sure that they are relevant to your state and the ARNG’s mission. If they are — and your Page or profile is full of posts that they will find valuable — then there’s a good chance they will follow you back. We recommend following recruiters, coaches, and other state ARNGs.

11. Respond to All Comments and @Mentions

Replying to people in the comments section of posts demonstrates to potential new followers that your account is active, responsive, and worth following. It’s also a best practice to engage with people on social media.

12. Learn from Analytics

The most important part of putting content ideas into action is testing and measuring them. It’s the only way to really know which ones work for your state so you can better tailor your efforts. Facebook and Instagram “Insights” (I.e., analytics) allow you to fine-tune your strategies to help you get followers.
