5 Reasons Why Your Instagram Audience is Not Growing

Instagram has changed a lot in 2018, and it’s harder to get followers on Instagram than ever before — especially from an ARNG recruiting perspective. But don’t worry — it’s not just you seeing less likes and less reach. It’s everyone!

If you want to get more followers, you’re going to need a fresh approach and strategy. Here are five reasons why you’re not seeing follower growth, along with ideas for what to do differently.

1. You're not Engaging with Your Audience

If you aren’t responding to comments, your followers simply aren't going to keep bothering to interact with you - it is called 'social' media after all. If you’re devoting all your time and energy into just posting, you’re not doing much to keep your audience from unfollowing you.

What You Should Do Instead:

Start responding to people in your posts! By engaging with people, you send a message to Instagram's algorithm that you're active and open to discussion. You should seek to trigger a conversation with good post captions and thoughtful comment responses - don’t merely make comments like “DM me” or “I understand.”

2. You Aren’t Consistent

Posting more frequently generally results in more engagement and followers. It obviously takes more time, but it's worth creating more content, and scheduling it out for consistency. The ARNG social strategy team advises posting once per day per active social media platform. This is not limited to Insta Stories, and you can post multiple Insta Stories per day too!

What You Should Do Instead:

Plan and create a posting schedule. Use the ARNGsocialmedia.com post content library, which includes post images, videos, and captions, to strategize what you’ll post. You should also ensure that your content has a single unified visual theme, sticking to relevant subjects and topics. Also, plan ahead for your Insta Stories by thinking of fun content ideas.

3. You don't interact with other accounts

If you want to get yourself out there, you need to reach out to other Instagram accounts, like other state, recruiter, or school accounts. This can facilitate collaborations and enable you to build relationships.

What You Should Do Instead:

Connect with other influencers and accounts, and make a conscious effort to expand your network. Comment on and like their content. The more people you’re connected with, the more likely you’ll expose your content to new groups of people that never heard of you before.

4. You Don't Share Insta Stories

Photos are awesome, but if you don’t use Insta Stories, you're missing out on great opportunities. Good Insta Stories will make your profile more compelling, and boost your state ARNG exposure in new ways.

What You Should Do Instead:

Post Insta Stories with hashtags and stickers to boost discovery potential. You can also use Instagram Live to share live events and updates. If a content piece would work better with a short video, you should go for it. Try your hand at Boomerangs.

5. You’re not Being You

Being authentic is important on all social media platforms, but especially on Instagram. People want to follow real people – even if you’re a “state” or brand - which is why influencers are so popular on the platform. Influencers or brands showing real people on Insta Stories, and in images and videos, are transparent and make followers feel within their reach.

What You Should Do Instead:

Examine what you post, and the tone of your captions. Ensure that your captions always represent your voice. They shouldn’t be robotic or sound like a sales pitch to join the Guard. Always strive to be real and you’ll help to ensure that your followers will believe and trust you. One of the best ways to do this is through behind-the-scenes content at events or training. You should post content that is spontaneous too.
